LIZARD (SW61/SW71) – rare plant twitch!
Saturday 24th May – LIZARD (SW61/SW71) – rare plant twitch! A repeat of the successful 2013 walk. This is for those who couldn’t make the last one and to see if the wetter and mild winter has made a difference to what may be around. A walk from Lizard Village SW7012 to below Lizard Lighthouse SX7011, and around the west coast SW6911 via Caerthillian Cove SW6912 and to Kynance Cove SW6913 and SW6813, ending at Kynance Cove. Not a square-bashing day but a walk to take in most of the Lizard’s rarest British plants including Twin-headed Clover (Trifolium bocconei), Upright Clover (T. strictum), Long-headed Clover (T. incarnatum subsp. molinerii), Prostrate Asparagus (Asparagus prostratus), Ciliate Rupturewort (Herniaria ciliolata), Dwarf Rush (Juncus capitatus), Spotted Cat’s-ear (Hypochaeris maculata) and perhaps even Three-lobed Water-crowfoot (Ranunculus tripartitus) and Land Quillwort (Isoetes histrix). A long list of uncommon species such as Thyme Broomrape (Orobanche alba), Chives (Allium schoenoprasum) and Hairy Greenweed (Genista pilosa) should also be seen. Also a chance to count the numbers of Spring Sandwort (Minuartia verna) plants present on this stretch of coast. Meet on Lizard Green, SW703125 at 9.30am.
