Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th April – LIZARD, SW61/SW71/SW62/SW72 – a detailed survey of Land Quillwort (Isoetes histrix) organised by David Pearman of the BSBI and Dr Fred Rumsey of the Natural History Museum and British Pteridological Society. The Lizard holds the only mainland British populations of this elusive species, and it was last comprehensively surveyed by Bristol University in 1982. The aim of the weekend will be to visit as many of the known Isoetes histrix sites and to count numbers of plants. On Saturday we hope to do Holestrow, Caerthillian, Kynance and along to the Rills (31 sites), and on Sunday the Mullion, Predannack and Kynance Farm, Gew Graze to Vellan Head areas (42 sites). Other sites include Trenoon, Crowgey, Black Head, Carnbarrow and Polkerth (8 sites), but these will be fitted in somehow! The plan is for small groups to split up to survey the sites, with at least one ‘Isoetes histrix expert spotter’ in each group. So if you are only a beginner don’t worry! Saturday – meet at NT Kynance Cove car park SW68861320 at 10am (free for NT members) and on Sunday meet at Predannack Wollas car park SW66901620 10am.
