Cornwall Bryophyte Group Meetings 2019

This is an informal group to encourage they study of bryophytes and recording in Cornwall. Anyone with an interest is welcome to attend meeting. Beginners are welcome as well as those experienced and confident at identifying bryophytes. The only equipment required is a hand lens (x10 or x20) and perhaps some paper packets for collecting specimens for later study. sites visits can be cold, wet and muddy so it’s advisable to wear good boots and bring warm waterproof clothing. All meetings start at 10am and usually finish before 4pm and we usually carry a packed lunch. Booking is not usually required but is desirable. Meeting can be cancelled at short notice if adverse weather is forecast.

February 9th – Saturday

St Neot and Goonzion Downs
Organiser: Matt Stribley.

The aim is to record the Goonzion Downs tetrad SX16T to the west of St Neot, for which there are only a couple of records. We’ll also record in the St Neot village area, tetrad SX16Y updating records. There are some old records from the St Neot area for species such as

February 20th – Wednesday

Kilmar Tor
Organiser: Matt Stribley
The target species for this meeting is Mylia taylorii which was last recorded at the west end of the tor in the early 70’s. It’s the only known site for this species in Cornwall. The Tor’s tetrad (SX27M) has a species count of 173 but some 70 species have not been since the 60’s.

March 3rd – Sunday

Par Beach and area

For this meeting we will be joining with Botanical Cornwall Group who are recording in SX0753 and SX0853. There have been 605 flowering plants and ferns recorded from the western monad SX0753 but no bryophyte records. The west tetrad SX04R also has very few records. A good population of Bryum algovicum var. rutheanum is known from the east end of the beach.

Meet in the beach car park at SX086531 which is free this time of year.

March 14th – Thursday

Port Gaverne

We will explore the Port Gaverne area within tetrad SX08A which has 7 records to date. The area offers a promising range of habitats, hopefully we will find an interesting rang of species.

Meet in Portgaverne (SX003808) where there is limited free parking for a few cars. If no spaces are available parking is available in the nearby Cornwall Council Port Isaac car park (SW999810), charges apply here.

March 30th – Saturday

Lizard Point and Housel Bay

A coastal walk from Lizard village exploring the Lizard Point/ Housel Bay area. As well as some good bryophytes we will hopefully see a few choughs along the way.
