Botanical Cornwall Group summer 2019 field meetings

All walks start at 10am (try to get to the meeting place by 9.30am) and usually finish at around 4pm, or earlier. Suitable clothing and footwear recommended, and bring a packed lunch. Wednesday 29th May LIZARD SW61/SW71 – A walk from Lizard Village SW7012 to below Lizard Lighthouse SW7011, and around the west coast SW6911 via Caerthillian Cove SW6912. Not a square-bashing day but a walk to take in most of the Lizard’s rarest British plants including Trifolium bocconei, T. strictum, T. incarnatum subsp. molinerii, Asparagus prostratus, Herniaria ciliolata, Juncus capitatus and Isoetes histrix. A long list of uncommon species such as Orobanche alba, Allium schoenoprasum and Genista pilosa should also be seen. Meet on Lizard Green, SW703125.

Tuesday 4th June – NARE HEAD SW93 – To check East Cornwall’s only population of Juncus capitatus, and also to look for Vicia lutea, Orobanche alba, Lotus angustissimus and Trifolium glomeratum, and other rarities. Meet at Kiberick Cove car park, south of Veryan SW92103800.

Wednesday 12th June – LIDCUTT WOOD and CARDINHAM DOWN SX16 – A square-bashing day to get SX1068, SX1069 and SX1169 over 200. Meet at junction SW of Cardeast SX113689.

Sunday 16th June – BUNNY’S HILL to MOUNT SX16 – A square-bashing day to get SX1267, 1367 and 1467 over 200. Meet at small parking area on Treslea Downs SX13566829.

Sunday 23rd June GREENA MOOR -A walk around the Plantlife and Cornwall Wildlife Trust reserve to see typical culm grassland species such as Cirsium dissectum, Carum verticillatum, Hypericum undulatum, Galium uliginosum and also Vicia orobus. We will also look out for Platanthera bifolia. Meet at Greena Moor reserve entrance, SW of Week St Mary SX234963.

Wednesday 3rd July – GURNARD’S HEAD area, TREEN SW43 – A walk along the coast to look for Genista pilosa. Meet at The Gurnard’s Head Inn, Treen SW435375.

Wednesday 10th July – NANCE WOOD and PORTREATH SW64 – To look for Euphorbia hyberna and Melittis melissophyllum in Nance Wood, and coastal species around the cliffs at Portreath. Meet at Lighthouse Hill car park, north of Portreath SW659456.

Wednesday 24th July – NEWMILL and PENFOUND area, NW of WEEK ST MARY SX29 – A square-bashing day to get SX2299, SX2298, SX2199 and SX2198 over 200. Meet at small car park at Week Ford SX224979.

Saturday 3rd August – COMMON MOOR and DARITE SX26 – A square-bashing day to get SX2469 and SX2569 over 200. Meet in Darite at road junction by bus stop SX25726931.

Wednesday 14th August – ST NEOT area SX16 – A square-bashing day to get SX1868, SX1968 and SX1969 over 200. Meet in layby north of Berry Down gate SX19326869.

Saturday 17th August – NEWLYN DOWNS SW85 – To look for Euphrasia vigursii and other heathland species including Erica ciliaris. Meet west of East Wheal Rose Farm, south of St Newlyn East at SW836552.

Wednesday 21st August – GRIMSCOTT and RED POST area SS20 – A square-bashing day to get SS2506, SS2605 and SS2606 over 200. Meet in layby south of Red Post crossroads SS263051.

Saturday 31st August – LOWLAND POINT, south of ST KEVERNE SW71 – A walk along the coast via Dean Quarries to look for Mentha pulegium. Meet at Roskilly’s, Tregellast Barton Farm, near St Keverne SW793206.
